Dr. Paul Symington
Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Theology & Philosophy! We are a very robust school: we currently have thirty full-time faculty members between the philosophy and theology departments. As indicated by our faculty pages, we have numerous dynamic teachers and gifted scholars dedicated to the mission of the University.

We offer both on-campus and online programs. Our online programs seek to provide a flexible way to advance your academic formation without compromising high standards of academic quality. Recognizing that philosophical and theological study provide an opportunity not only for discipline-specific learning but also for developing marketable habits of thought and skills, we offer a fully online A.A. degree in Philosophy, and one in Theology. In addition, we have online versions for the M.A. in Theological Studies and M.A. in Theology & Christian Ministry. For those directly interested in service to the Church and ministry, Franciscan also offers a fully online M.A. in Catechetics & Evangelization.

Our on-campus offerings include a B.A. degree program in Philosophy, one in Theology, and one in Catechetics. Regarding graduate studies, in order to serve your particular needs, we offer a 36-credit M.A. in Theological Studies, a 42-credit Masters of Theological Sciences and a 36-credit M.A in Theology & Christian Ministry. We also offer an M.A. degree in Philosophy that offers solid intellectual formation and opens a possible pathway for doctoral work in philosophy. Such a high concentration of faculty and students in the areas of theology and philosophy provide wonderful opportunities for students to get the most out of their academic preparation and University life.

The above programs listed above exist alongside other initiatives associated with our school including the Catechetical Institute, the Franciscan Studies minor, and the Center for Bioethics.

As a University deeply committed to its service to the Church, the School of Theology & Philosophy takes its role very seriously in hopes of deepening faith and integrating it with all realms of knowledge. Beyond programing and curricula, we are committed to the following vision:

  • (I) to be academically excellent in service to the profession of learning and the discovery, apprehension, and communication of truth;
  • (II) to provide grounding, application, and constructive leadership to the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines in service to the integration of faith and reason;
  • (III) to provide appropriate direction to each student in light of his or her unique personal vocation to help them respond joyfully and effectively to God’s call to discipleship.

As we seek to live-out this commitment, we recognize God’s blessing in the wonderful students we have the privilege to educate.

Sincerely yours,

Paul Symington
