Dr. Paul Symington
Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Theology & Philosophy! Please familiarize yourself with our website in order to find exactly what fits your needs. Our school is very unique because it houses only two departments; however, we currently have thirty full-time faculty members between the philosophy and theology departments. Excellent teachers and active researchers, our faculty are second to none!

We offer both on-campus and online programs. Our on-campus offerings include a B.A. degree program in Philosophy, one in Theology, and one in Catechetics. We also offer a 36 credit M.A. in Theological Studies and a 42 credit Masters of Theological Sciences for those seeking to pursue a PhD after completion. For those without the level of background in theology, we also offer a 36 credit M.A in Theology & Christian Ministry. For those who desire a graduate degree in philosophy, we also offer an M.A. in Philosophy.

We are also very proud of our online programs, which provide a flexible way in your advancement without compromising high standards of academic quality. Recognizing that philosophical and theological study aid students not only with learning content but also with developing marketable habits of thought and skills, we offer a fully online A.A. degree in Philosophy, and one in Theology. In addition, we have online versions for the M.A. in Theological Studies and M.A. in Theology & Christian Ministry. For those directly interested in service to the Church and ministry, Franciscan also offers an M.A. in Catechetics & Evangelization.

The above exist alongside other initiatives associated with our school including the Catechetical Institute, the Franciscan Studies minor, and the Center for Bioethics.

As a University deeply committed to its service to the Church, the School of Theology & Philosophy takes its role very seriously in hopes of deepening our faith and integrating with all realms of knowledge. Beyond programing and curricula, we are committed to the following vision:

  • (I) to be academically excellent in service to the profession of learning and the discovery, apprehension, and communication of truth;
  • (II) to provide grounding, application, and constructive leadership to the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines in service to the integration of faith and reason;
  • (III) to provide appropriate direction to each student in light of his or her unique personal vocation to help them respond joyfully and effectively to God’s call to discipleship.

As we seek to live-out this commitment, we recognize God’s blessing in the wonderful students we have had the privilege to educate.

Sincerely yours,
Paul Symington
